Electric cars

AUTHOR Better! Whangarei DATE 29 May 2017

The Whangarei District Council has ordered its first electric vehicle and will be investigating further purchases as part of its ongoing fleet replacement.

The Council says, "we have been investigating the purchase of an electric vehicle with a longer range. Working with NRC we have been able to procure a Renault Zoe at a discounted price of $34,000 (normally $56,000 through our All of Government contract) which will arrive in August. While this is considerably higher than a comparable petrol car ($22,000), the running costs should be considerably lower. A more detailed ‘total cost of ownership’ analysis will be completed before as part of the Fleet Policy review, which will focus on moving towards an electric vehicle fleet."

Electric vehicles actually have higher running costs than petrol. Here are the mileage rates allowed by the IRD for travel claims. "This year we are able to set mileage rates for hybrid and electric cars. For the first time we have been able to obtain reliable data in respect of the fixed and running cost for these types of vehicles. These mileage rates are: Petrol - 73 cents per km Hybrid - 73 cents per km Electric - 81 cents per km For both Hybrid and Electric vehicles, our data shows that although these types of vehicle have lower running costs, these are offset by higher fixed costs."
